你知道“加油”這個詞最早是怎么來的嗎？其實，它和貴州安龍有關(guān)系！

Do you know where the phrase “Jiayou” (meaning “keep it up” or “you can do it”) originally comes from? It actually has a connection to Anlong,  Guizhou!

 

在安龍，有兩個名字家喻戶曉。一個是張锳，另一個是他的兒子張之洞。之所以出名，是因為他們都特別重視教育。

In Anlong, two names are widely known: Zhang Ying and his son Zhang Zhidong. They're famous because of their deep commitment to education.

1841年，張锳剛到興義府上任。他發(fā)現(xiàn)這里雖然窮，但很多人晚上還點(diǎn)著油燈讀書，他很感動，為了鼓勵讀書郎寒窗苦讀，功成名就之后建設(shè)家鄉(xiāng)，張锳每晚都派差役挑著桐油，沿街巡邏?？匆娔膽羧思伊林鵁?、傳出讀書聲，就停下來高喊一聲：“府臺給相公添油啰！”隨后舀出一勺桐油，倒進(jìn)讀書人的燈盞里。

In 1841, when Zhang Ying was appointed to Xingyi Prefecture, he noticed that although the region was poor, many locals still studied by oil lamp late into the night. Deeply moved, he decided to encourage these hardworking scholars. Every evening, he sent patrolmen carrying tung oil through the streets. Whenever they saw a household lit by a study lamp and heard the sound of reading, they would stop and shout, “The Prefect sends oil for the young master!”  Then they would pour a ladle of tung oil into the student's lamp.

 

就這樣，張锳連續(xù)14年，用自己的俸祿給興義府城的讀書人添燈油，成就了“知府添油勸學(xué)”的佳話。

Zhang Ying did this for 14 years, using his own salary to provide lamp oil to the students of Xingyi, creating a legendary story of a prefect who quite literally fueled learning.

張锳憂國憂民，還在安龍半山亭留下楹聯(lián)——攜酒一壺到此間暢談風(fēng)月，極目千里問幾輩能挽河山。張锳還在安龍建書院、辦學(xué)堂。隨后的60年里，這里走出了6個進(jìn)士、96個舉人，人才輩出。

He once left behind a couplet at Banshan Pavilion in Anlong that read: “Bringing a pot of wine, I talk freely of wind and moon; gazing into the distance, I ask who can save the nation.” Zhang Ying also built academies and schools in Anlong. Over the following 60 years, the area produced 6 jinshi (advanced scholars) and 96 juren (successful provincial-level candidates)—a true cradle of talent.

 

張锳的兒子張之洞，4歲到安龍，也在這盞油燈下讀書長大。后來成了晚清“四大名臣”之一。他創(chuàng)辦了武漢大學(xué)、四川大學(xué)、南京大學(xué)等名校的前身，還建了漢陽鐵廠、修了京漢鐵路，干了很多影響中國的大事。他一直記得小時候在安龍學(xué)到的東西，常說：“一生學(xué)問文章，其基在此也?！?/span>

His son Zhang Zhidong, who moved to Anlong at the age of four, also grew up studying by that same oil lamp. He would go on to become one of the “Four Eminent Officials of Late Qing.”He helped found the predecessors of Wuhan University, Sichuan University, and Nanjing University. He also established the Hanyang Iron Works and built the Beijing-Hankou Railway—initiatives that left a profound impact on China. Zhang Zhidong often recalled his early education in Anlong, saying, “All my learning and writing had their roots there.”

如今，“加油”成為了我們常說的鼓勵詞，而在它的發(fā)源地，貴州黔西南的人們依舊在用努力和拼搏，詮釋“守正篤行，久久為功”的加油精神。

Today, “Jiayou” has become a common word of encouragement.  And in its birthplace, people in Qianxinan, Guizhou, still live by the spirit of perseverance and dedication—holding fast to their values and achieving greatness through long-term effort.
